Then she came across her childhood friend - Pierce Madison. From an awkward, shy boy Pierce blossomed into a handsome, rich and confident businessman. Pierce was in the middle of dilemma himself. And he solicited Gem's help to overcome it. He was negotiating a huge merger with the business tycoon Mr. David Geyser. But it seemed Mr. Geyser was also hoping to merge personal business with Pierce by marrying off his daughter named Rhona to him. 

Pierce asked Gem to pretend to be his fiancee so he could wheedle himself out of the tricky situation. He did not love Rhona. And had no intentions of settling down- ever. As a friend, Gem agreed to pose as his fiancee but only once -at a weekend party. At the party, Gem found out that Rhona was seeing her ex-fiancee Robbie. Gem wanted to win Robbie back. She enlisted Pierce's help to win him back. Pierce agreed. 

The plot thickens. But as Pierce and Gem got nearer to the end they desired, they realized that it wasn't what they truly wanted in their hearts in the first place. Gem and Pierce shared a number of adventures and misadventures. What concerned Gem the most was the growing awareness that Pierce's opinion mattered to her. 

She was strangely drawn to him. Like fillings to a magnet. At first, she attributed it to her wounded ego. Or low self-esteem. But as the days progressed, she was beginning to suspect something more. Something that she didn't count on to happen. 

Their acquaintance blossomed. She found out later that she was in love with Pierce!

The conflict of the story stemmed from the fact that Pierce thought Gem was still very much in love with Robbie.  Gem, on the other hand, had doubts if Pierce could feel the same way for her since he was bent on staying a bachelor for the rest of his life. Gem did not want to get emotionally involved unless she was doubly sure of Pierce. She had been burned by love once. She did not want that to happen again.
